Bulerias Lesson

Jason McGuire slows down the very intense bulerias compas for anyone who's interested to see. The Bulerias is a flamenco rhythm (compas), counted in 12 beats. I laughed out loud at myself when I first tried learning this because my mouth/mind would stop counting just to spite my hands and vice versa.

The compas looks like this with the accented beats in bold. The x's signify the golpe (a finger/right hand) tapping the face of the guitar to accent the beat. Flamenco guitars have a tap plate, or golpeador, to prevent the sound board of the instrument from getting damaged by the repeated fingernail strikes.

The new Gibson Zoot Suit SG guitar is the ultimate for stage style and playability. The word "zoot" is jazz slang meaning extravagant style to which this guitar encapsulates. At first glance, one might think that the unique coloration of the Zoot Suit guitar is simply a clever paint scheme. Incredibly though, there is no paint used on the guitar. Featuring a brand new body built with multiple birch wood laminate, each laminate piece is dyed with a different color then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood. Two coats of satin lacquer are then applied to provide a smooth finish and also help protect the body from any damage.

Other catchy characteristics of the SG Zoot Suit guitar include the multicolored neck of the Zoot Suit that also constructed using multiple birch wood laminate pieces, and Gibson's legendary 496R and 500T pickups, which feature clear coil forms to see the copper wire, ceramic magnets, and plenty of wire for the screaming' hot pickups.

The Gibson SG Zoot Suit comes in five extraordinary colorful combinations: Rainbow, Black and Red, Black and White, Black and Natural, and Red and Blue. This guitar is one of 2009's most standout and exciting guitars and produced in limited quantity.

The XXXV-9 comes ready to play with Elixir® strings and in a hardshell Taylor case, and includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Taylor Guitars co-founders Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug. The XXXV-9 will be produced in an initial run of only 35 guitars and offered at a suggested retail price of $4998. All 35th Anniversary models, including those yet-to-be announced, are expected to be available in North America in early fall and internationally late winter.

The XXXV-9 takes the clarity and familiar feel of a 6-string guitar and embellishes the sound with three additional strings, two of which are paired an octave higher, to add extra sparkle to the midrange tone.

As part of the company's 35th anniversary celebration, Taylor Guitars is readying the next set of what the company is calling "You Asked For It" models: guitars players have requested through the years that are first-of-a-kind for the company. The first to be announced is the XXXV-9: a 9-string guitar that blends the best of a 6-string and a 12-string into a richly toned hybrid model.

The 9-string will appeal to players looking for extra shimmer without compromising the fundamental focus of the bass strings. The XXXV-9 features a GS body shape with Tropical mahogany back and sides, a Sitka spruce top, and Taylor's Standard II soundboard bracing. Other appointments include a three-ring abalone rosette, a "35" anniversary logo between the 11th and 12th frets, and the company's Expression System® pickup, for high-fidelity plugged-in playing. Chrome mini tuners and buttons grace the rosewood peghead veneer, along with a mother-of-pearl peghead "Taylor" inlay.

Made of carved korina and chambered with an F hole

The new Rees CKF guitars are being made in Cambridge, England. A fully carved arch-top front and a half-carved back are added to the well developed and proven chambering of the Rees F2 guitar.

The body is solid along the center from the neck to the bridge, but hollow on both sides. The result is a fine sounding instrument, whose soft curves and light balanced weight distribution make it very comfortable to play. There are many choices to the overall build of the guitar:

The body is stained by rubbing by hand which brings out the full beauty of the fine wood figuring, rather than by spraying which would obscure the wood grain. The body is finished in multiple layers of thin acrylic lacquer, oil and wax, to preserve best resonance and tone, while offering

a finest hand-made appearance that is more durable than simple oil and wax. The neck is finished in high-tech polymer lacquer for durability, with a fast action satin finish to the back of the neck. A choice of body colors is available: Natural korina, Golden korina, Dark Cherry, Amber Sunburst, Tobacco Sunburst, Dark Cherry Sunburst, Stripy Brown, Stripy Black.

In a stunning joint announcement that was nonetheless nearly a decade-and-a-half in the making, pickup design and manufacturing legend Bill Lawrence has teamed up with Jeff and Don Lace of Lace Music Products to build all future Lawrence-designed pickups at the Lace factory here in "Surf City, USA." Effective immediately, Lawrence's current Keystone® and Wilde® products, as well as all subsequent Bill Lawrence designs, will be built and shipped from the Lace facility under the direct supervision of Bill and Becky Lawrence and the Lace brothers, who anticipate significant improvements in technical innovation, quality control, and delivery time

my design work and bring my latest ideas to fruition. I simply can't imagine better manufacturing and marketing partners than the Lace family and their team — both companies have established their own unique places in the market, each with very different design and marketing approaches that I'm sure we can maintain side-by-side into the future. It's a classic win-win situation for us, our distribution channels, and the pickup buying public."

"Given my current health issues," Lawrence continued, "Becky and I maintaining our own production facility was no longer feasible, and a partnership with our old friends has become the logical way for me to continue.

Bill Lawrence stated that, "It's been some fourteen years since we first discussed working together with Jeff and Don — we have always had so much in common. While most of our industry has been focused on merely recreating the past, we've both both been working on new, original ideas to advance the art and science of the pickup. Over the years, we've developed a close friendship and mutual respect based on our common principles. But, until now, the time for a joint venture never seemed quite right."
